I have been evaluating the Google Penguin Penalty over the course of the past few weeks, and believe it to be far more inclusive than what Google has noted. (Google stated publicly that the penalty hits about 3% of websites.) I believe a more accurate number to be more than 17%. Here's why. I found two studies which indicated that 80%+ of websites were not optimized. If that is accurate, then we are really talking about 3/17ths of all sites, or 17.6% of sites one might find in a Google search. This number better reflects my examination of web results in various industries today.
Tuesday's Google Over-Optimization penalty has changed the landscape for web directories. I really think the result will be that quality web directories will continue to thrive, even more than in years past. I think that site owners will be extremely careful in link sculpting in the immediate future. The SERPS seem to indicate that directory editors, especially, need to limit their keyword placement, and write content for the end-user, and less for the search engines. Interestingly, I have noticed that there are some sites in the search results which have little SEO, but are displaying high, nonetheless. In any event, content should be written in a painstakingly careful manner.
