I wanted to start the new year off with an article about the best value top 10 best web directories. Every year the landscape changes. In years past it was all about the Page Rank. Today, there are many other variables which send the right signals to Google. In today's world, cost of listing a site in a directory is an extremely important consideration- and there are some good values if you watch for them. The least expensive listing in this list is $5 and the most expensive is $25, and these are pretty solid sites. You can list in all of them for about $128, a little less if the promo codes work. These are also listed, below.
In this article I balance SEOMOZ Page Authority, Alexa Rank, Page Rank, Price, and other web directory significance factors into the value. I do not own, nor do I have any financial interest in these web directories. This information is current as of January 31, 2012.

10. Webworldindex.com- This web directory has an SEOMOZ Page Authority Rank of 71/100, Alexa of 15,362, Page Rank 5, and charges a one time fee of $25.
9. Domaining.in- I like this web directory for a number of reasons. It has a great Page Authority of 81/100. Alexa 24,915. Page Rank 4. A regular web directory submission is $7.99, and a featured listing is $25. I like the value for the featured one.
8. Somuch.com- This web directory is a very good one. Page Authority is 84/100. Alexa of 13,999. Page Rank 5. A regular listing is $7.99 and a featured listing is $22.95 a year.
7. Linkcentre.com- Page Authority is 73/100, Alexa of 14,553, and a Page Rank of 5. A one year listing is $14.95.
6. Piseries.com- Page Authority of 64/100. The Alexa ranking is 27,857. Page Rank of 3. Listings are $10.90 for a regular listing, and $19.90 for a featured listing.

I have been evaluating the Google Penguin Penalty over the course of the past few weeks, and believe it to be far more inclusive than what Google has noted. (Google stated publicly that the penalty hits about 3% of websites.) I believe a more accurate number to be more than 17%. Here's why. I found two studies which indicated that 80%+ of websites were not optimized. If that is accurate, then we are really talking about 3/17ths of all sites, or 17.6% of sites one might find in a Google search. This number better reflects my examination of web results in various industries today.
Tuesday's Google Over-Optimization penalty has changed the landscape for web directories. I really think the result will be that quality web directories will continue to thrive, even more than in years past. I think that site owners will be extremely careful in link sculpting in the immediate future. The SERPS seem to indicate that directory editors, especially, need to limit their keyword placement, and write content for the end-user, and less for the search engines. Interestingly, I have noticed that there are some sites in the search results which have little SEO, but are displaying high, nonetheless. In any event, content should be written in a painstakingly careful manner.
